"A dangerous misconception I've noticed in my career is when people think you can calm down a maniac mutant with just the right dose of sedatives.
Well, spoiler alert: it doesn't always work.
"

Anastasia moves the slide that is projected on the wall behind her, before leaning against the desk. The slide reads: "The effects of sleep-inducing medication on mutant population."

When she was invited as a speaker for Mental Health Awareness Day, she didn't expect to face such a big audience (mostly because this month of June was scorching hot). In fact, the amphitheater was so full that some students were even sitting on the stairs.
Thank goodness the a/c works though.

"Just like non-mutants organisms, mutant organisms have an unpredictable factor when it concerns...chemical components clashing inside their body. The difference between the two races is that the effect of medication on mutants is even less documented, also more dangerous. And not just for the concerned, mind you."

She notices even less hubbub now.

"Take the case of Mr. Jenkins. A 42-years-old mutant. A telepath, but had a serious sleep disorder. Before he got hospitalized, he didn't sleep for almost a month, mostly because of night terrors. Some of you might already be familiar with the term. Night terrors are nightmares, but hard to deal with because they leave you sweaty, screaming, and sometimes sleepwalking."

Although Katja’s field was biochemistry (more specifically: pharmacology) and not psychology or psychiatry, she wasn’t the first person you’d expect at a conference about mental health. However, drugs, the topic of her current research, were just as present in the field of mental health as of physical health, and as such there were, in fact, speakers who were possibly relevant to her. She’d already attended one lecture (disappointingly misinformed and stereotypical) and was now well into her second one (which, so far, seemed much more promising).

"Mr. Jenkins was hospitalized after falling from a second-story window and was given sedatives to help him sleep. It didn't have the expected effects, however."
The case of Mr. Jenkins wasn't even displayed on her slide. Here's hoping her manager won't give her a hard time for disclosing this information. "His level of distress raised, which caused him to lose control over his power subconsciously. He wreaked havoc around him by projecting his nightmares in the mind of everyone in a 1 km radius. Keep in mind, that happened while he was asleep."

What a nightmarish story, no pun intended (ha ha, pun absolutely intended). Since she was currently working on a doctorate and therefore had by now memorised aaaaall the rules of data processing, anonymisation and so on, Katja of course assumed that "Mr. Jenkins" was a pseudonym, rather than the man’s real name. Because, quite frankly, that was probably a story no one would like to be associated with by name.

Anastasia noticed a hand rising, but she didn't allow the young woman to talk yet since she anticipated the question. "Yes, his powers were dramatically increased when he was asleep. And, alas, that is not the subject of this conference. Now..." Clearing her throat, she wonders how many Slytherins are gonna visit her at the end of the conference to ask her specifically about power increase. "Some might object saying it's mostly because of the mental state of Mr. Jenkins, and not the sedatives. Well, it's quite a comorbid case."

Ooooh, a snowball effect! Katja took note and highlighted that part on her notepad to remember to ask the speaker for references to include this case in her literature review. Or, if it hadn’t ben published, she’d just have to enter it as a lecture in her sources. As she noted, she continued listening (yay multitasking!) in case the woman said what exactly in the medication had caused this rather unfortunate side effect (if it was known, of course, considering how few studies paid attention to the concrete effects of medication on mutant physiology).

Since she was talking to a large audience, Anastasia preferred to vulgarise her study (so she avoided complicated latin words and such). She actually had to struggle a bit to be able to present this subject, the organizers thought it was too controversial - which is understandable because it might paint mutants in an even darker shade. She convinced them that it would be smooth sailing (they probably shouldn't have believed her). "We managed to stabilize Mr. Jenkins by isolating him. Turns out, he was able to listen to the thoughts of everyone when he was asleep - which aggravated his state and nightmares."

While the woman speaking didn’t give off any mad scientist vibes, at least not as far as Katja was concerned, talks of isolating a mutant who was having a breakdown (or kind of) sounded awfully like ‘20s asylum horror stories. Still, she didn’t speak up yet, instead waiting to hear the next part of the story. Given the circumstances, she guessed that isolation made sense — as long as it was only a temporary measure.

Katja wasn't the only one with questions thought. Anastasia did allow one young man to talk when she saw too many hands shooting up. "You say it was comorbid, but what element exactly is dangerous in sedatives ?"
"What is dangerous is being stuck in our mind, and not being able to come back to reality because our body doesn't respond anymore due to sedatives."
"But can't we stimulate the body again so that it wakes up ? With adrenaline or something ?" "That is a risky decision, not to be taken lightly. Does anyone know why ?"

If this was turning into a participatory lecture, Katja would participate: "Because the adrenaline might interact negatively with the sedatives you’ve just given, because, especially with a mutant physiology, you can’t be sure of the side effects adrenaline will have, because if the patient’s mind is already overstimulated and his abilities boosted, the adrenaline might make the problem worse and create a vicious circle…" She wasn’t even a doctor and she could think of many more possible problems with that approach.

Anastasia was glad that someone was actually following what she was saying. "Very well put, miss. In addition to all that, mutants have a tendency to fall into a comatose state more often than non-mutants. About 26% more often actually." "Why is that ?" "There's a lot of theories. One of them states that the psyche of a mutant is tightly linked to their powers. Which means... well, what do you think it means ?"

"That their powers depend on how they feel?", one of the listeners tried. At that, Katja spoke up again: "That’s hardly specific to mutants, though. Everyone’s ability to function is tied to their psyche, to some extent. It doesn’t matter whether you’re an athlete, an artist, an accountant, a high school sophomore… How you feel and your mental health will affect your behaviour and your capacities."

"To some extent, as you said." Anastasia nodded. "And some are more responsive to it than others. According to the theory, however, in the case of mutants, when their emotions overflow, it shows on their power first; and when their powers overflow, it shows on their mental ability too." "Doesn't that concern mostly mutants with mental powers then? "Ah. I'd say it's more visible on them yes. But not only."

Yes, when mutants snapped their abilities (for the ones who had spectacular ones) were typically the first sign. And in other people it showed through excessive speeding, yelling or causing a shooting. But that was a whole other issue and this wasn’t a study day on gun violence. Katja was still left with an unanswered question, though: how had they solved the example patient’s issue? She didn’t ask it just yet, but would if the discussion veered off-topic without giving indications of going back to the story that had started it.

"So are mutants more powerful when asleep ?" This question reminded her that she should indeed return to the main topic. "It's a question that all of you can answer. Isn't human potential higher on a subconscious level ?" She looks behind her slightly, moves the slide again, resituating the topic. "Now then, about sleep-inducing medication. One can enter this state through different means, and not only pills. A state that is considered therapeutic for most can become destructive for some mutants."

So, really, hibernating was a power move. More seriously: whatever extra "power" people got when sleeping (whether they were mutants or not) wouldn’t do them much good, since they wouldn’t be able to use it. And, as the current story pointed out, that "power" (yes, the air quotes were absolutely necessary) could sometimes even be harmful and, as such, more of a handicap than an asset. "So, how was Mr. Jenkins’ problem solved?" That is, if it had been.

Ah, right, the murder. "Hmm... coming back to Mr. Jenkins, his sedated state was destructive, although he was in dire need of sleep. We isolated him, thinking it would temperate his nightmares." She pauses a bit, looking at one of her reflections discreetly to check if her eyes changed colors - no. "It did temperate them but didn't eliminate them. We started working on his night terrors, but it was a long-term process. We managed however to alleviate his pain thanks to the power of another mutant. That is all the information I can afford to give so far." She said while looking at the lady.

That was not very specific, but Katja wouldn’t press, not wanting to put this Jenkins or maybe the other mutant involved in an awkward position. She scribbled down a few more notes and questions to ask the speaker after her presentation before looking up again.

She paused a bit, waiting for another question. But strangely enough, none of them thought of following it up this time. "As I said, one can enter a state of sleep by different means. Pills, hypnosis, or through the power of a mutant." She then starts explaining how sleeping pills work on the brain, and how it is sensibly different from natural sleep. The different kinds of sleeping pills and their known side effects - basically, she was following the slide (for once).

As the lecture went on, Katja’s notepad became more and more full of scribbles which probably looked like gibberish to everyone except Katja herself — since she was the only one who would need to use these notes, that was fine. During the speaker’s next pause in her lecture, Katja’s hand shot up again: "These side effects you describe, are they the ‘standard’ side effects for these pills, regardless of who uses them, or specific to mutants? And, if they’re specific to mutants, is it anecdotal evidence, or are there studies about them?" Shows still thinking of the literature on which to base her own research.

20 minutes in, and she can pint point her favorite student already. "I meant standard side-effects. But mutants do have a higher chance of getting those side effects than non-mutants. Since the unpredictable factor is higher with mutants - because each one has a different power, which leads to different reactions. " Anastasia smiles a bit. "Because of that, we have a lot of one-case studies, but we lack generalized ones."

The reply didn’t surprise Katja, considering the diversity amongst mutants. Still, she would be sure to ask for the references of these one-case studies after the lecture. "You keep talking about side effects affecting mutants’ powers", God, she didn’t like that word, "do you know if any of these studies also paid attention to other aspects of mutants’ physiologies?" The beauty of the X-Gene was that it could leave you perfectly ‘normal’ just as it could turn your blood acidic, your bones into rubber and your hair into algae.

"Well, it's more of a reciprocated effect, but I hear you. Your question seem to have an aim; are you officially researching on this subject by any chance ?" It's been some time since the lecture began, and she started noticing that some students are more uncomfortable than others. The organizers won't be happy in the end, so might as well push through the taboo for the sake of science.

Anastasia nodded and made a point to talk to her about it later. "Then you must already be familiar with the works of D. Tuckenstein. For those interested, " she adds while looking around, "he's the one who promoted GABA medication - which are, for both mutants and non-mutants, more beneficial because with fewer side effects." She then takes a pencil and goes to write on the board a list of names and references. "These references might answer some of your questions about mutant physiology, miss."
